The North Shore Management Board, in conjunction with ARDC, prepared this website tool using Federal funds under award NA21NOS4190083 from the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, administered by the Office for Coastal Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Department of Commerce provided to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program. Background
To augment the tools available to the North Shore Management Board in their ongoing monitoring role to ensure that policies and standards in the North Shore Management Plan are implemented and consistency is maintained by local government units, they requested an updated coastal erosion hazard area mapping layer for the entirety of Minnesota’s Lake Superior’s coastline. The information found here are the first phases of this tool.
Coastal erosion impacts the Lake Superior North Shore community and environment by stressing Lake Superior water quality and nearshore biological communities through increased erosion and Coastal community infrastructure, economy, and resiliency considering increasing storm events. Current coastal erosion hazard mapping data does exist to mitigate and plan for stressors on the coastal community, but is not consistent, thorough, or readily available to the public. The goals of the Coastal Erosion Hazard Mapping (CEHM) project align with solving this problem through it’s key objectives:
- A web-based mapping tool
- Tool that can be used to identify the suitability for development
- Lake Superior guide to living in the coastal zone
- Common recommendations for all St. Louis, Lake, and Cook County property owners regarding conservation concerns/hazard erosion areas
- A tool that is easily accessible to landowners, officials, decision makers, contractors, realtors
- A plan and budget established for the tool to be maintained and updated
