Background

In the heart of Two Harbors and connected into the city sidewalk system, Minnehaha Elementary School is in a great location to encourage families to safely walk and bike to school. In 2017, the Lake County Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) Program applied to and was awarded planning assistance from Healthy Northland and the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) to identify, mark, and map safe routes for families to walk and bike on existing sidewalks to Minnehaha Elementary.

Temporary markings that designate the family walking/biking routes will be installed in anticipation of the 2018-19 academic year. The community will then be invited to provide feedback on these routes; this feedback will guide changes to help publicize the safest routes for families to travel to and from school. Hopefully, these temporary routes can inspire permanent signage in the future as well.

A group with representation from ISD #381, the City of Two Harbors, and the Two Harbors community serves as the project team for this project.
